Geothermal energy is a baseload renewable resource located where the majority of Texans live. According to Texas’ State Energy Conservation Office, geothermal energy or “earth heat” is the third largest potential source of renewable energy in the United States, behind only hydropower and biomass. Texas’ stock of existing and abandoned oil and gas production wells provides a vast potential reserve for future geothermal energy production within the state. There are already geothermal projects underway in the Gulf Coast. With over 600,000 oil and gas wells currently on record there are more than enough to generate 1000s to 10,000s of MWs of baseload renewable power. In the eastern portion of Texas, the general trend shows that by 10,000 ft temperatures are hot enough to generate electricity with current technology. In South Texas, the temperatures reach over 325°F by 12,000 ft. The geothermal industry is working to establish Texas as a leader for low-temperature geothermal development.
Listen to industry leaders from around the country talk about the opportunities and challenges of geothermal development in Texas, including:
- The market/resource potential for geothermal energy
- Enabling/pending/needed legislation
- Financing projects
- Oil and gas development practices which can translate into geothermal development
- Enabling technologies such as Organic Rankine Cycle engines
- Companies working on geothermal energy projects in Texas
- Trade groups and associations to join
